Mothership Massacre

Sunday August 2nd, 2009 - Kenosha, WI

Peee-yewww. Boy, did we stink up the airwaves with our Mothership Connection radio show on WLIP tonight. None of us seemed to be clicking and the longer it dragged on the worse it got. It got to the point of being funny and all we could do was finish out the time.

That’s how it goes in any kind of creative endeavor. There are hot streaks and then those not so hot. Tonight we were somewhere between a Slurpee and a penguin’s pecker. It was downright icy and when that happens three hours can seem like a three year prison term.

The good news is nobody cares. We’re not going to get kicked off the air for having one bad show or even ten. Nobody swore and we didn’t have any dead air or anything horrible other than our content wasn’t as crisp as we’ve been known to have so often in the past.

For a little show on a little radio station in between two large cities we’ve hung in there quite nicely. Our guests have been way above average and our on air chemistry as a group is constantly growing and improving. Everyone on the show has something to offer and it wasn’t anybody’s fault that tonight we were off the mark. But we all knew it. We stunk.

I’m not going to let it get me down though. In the past it might have bothered me a little but not now. I’ve been through so much worse than this it doesn’t even register as a small blip on the radar. I don’t get paid for the show and nobody else does either. The station is happy with what we’re doing and they want to have a paranormal show in their lineup.

I’ve been showing up consistently and I plan on continuing to do so. We’ve had quite a few excellent shows and I know we will have a lot more if we keep showing up and doing what we’ve been doing. This was an off night but as a whole we’ve got a good thing here.

Scott Markus was back from L.A. and sat in with us tonight. Even he laughed because it was so odd for the vibe to be off that badly. He’s been part of it when we’ve been on a big roll so he knows how electric that feels. When it goes like it’s supposed to it’s great fun.

It was still fun and we managed to get some laughs out of it as we stumbled through our three hours. Our regular callers called and nobody in studio was panicked so there was no crisis going on. Our guests were good so we tried our best to get callers to join in and take up some of the time but all we could get was a wackadoo who’d had a few dozen beers.

He was babbling somewhere between the shakes and full blown mental illness and that made it even funnier. We all just looked at each other in the studio and started laughing at the situation. This wasn’t going to be our night no matter how much we wanted to change the vibe. Even our guests laughed about it after the guy hung up. It was one of those days.

It wasn’t as fun as usual but we still had a good time. Come to think of it that’s how we all felt after Jerry’s Kidders on Saturday at WGN. We weren’t happy with that one either. I hope it was just a fluke and both shows will bounce right back. We’re better than this.
